When Your Nervous System Never Left the Delivery Room

You had a birth plan.

You imagined how you would breathe through each contraction, hold your baby for the first time, and begin motherhood feeling strong and empowered.

Instead, everything changed within minutes.

People spoke over you. Decisions were made for you. Before you knew it, the control over your own body and your baby had slipped from your hands.

You didn't just lose the birth you had hoped for.

You lost trust in yourself.

As a birth photographer and doula, I have witnessed births. I have witnessed women breath their babies into the world with incredible strength.

But in my work and in my volunteering over the years, I also met women who did not have the opportunity to experienced the birth they planned for. Women who came out of the other side of their birth experience traumatised and disappointed. Women who couldn't understand why their baby is not connecting with them the way they hoped.

Those wounds don't disappear because your baby is healthy.

They quietly become part of your everyday life.

Maybe you stop recognising yourself in the mirror.

Maybe your body no longer feels like home. Nothing you wear feels comfortable because you no longer feel comfortable in your own skin.

Your partner tells you you're beautiful, but you can't believe them. Intimacy feels difficult because your body has become associated with fear, loss or disappointment instead of safety.

Then comes the question everyone eventually asks.

"So... when are you having another?"

Your heart may long for another baby.

But your body remembers.

Even when there are no medical reasons preventing pregnancy, unresolved trauma and ongoing stress can keep the nervous system in a constant state of alert. Elevated stress hormones, such as cortisol, can influence many of the body's systems, including those involved in reproduction. For some women, this becomes another painful layer in an already complex fertility journey.

The harder it becomes, the more anxious you feel.

The more anxious you feel, the harder it is to trust your body again.

It becomes a cycle that can feel impossible to escape.

I know this because I've lived it.

Long before I became a healing therapist, I was simply a woman trying to grow her family.

Over the years I experienced five pregnancy losses, including miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy. Each one left a different imprint on my heart and my body. One left me sitting alone in hospital with a temperature close to 40°C. Another left me bleeding beside the shores of Loch Lomond while trying to make sense of what had just happened.

I know what it feels like to wonder whether your body has betrayed you.

I know the anxiety that arrives with the next pregnancy.

The endless checking. The fear every time you go to the toilet. The panic that tells you something terrible is about to happen.

But perhaps the biggest lesson my losses taught me was this:

Sometimes healing isn't about finding another medical answer, sometimes we need someone to help us process what our nervous system is still carrying.

My own healing journey led me far beyond traditional talking therapy. It led me into deep emotional healing, family constellation work, EFT, meditation, aromatherapy, and exploring the patterns we can unknowingly carry through generations. Along the way I began to understand how grief, fear, beliefs and family stories can shape the way we move through motherhood.

That journey changed my life.

It also changed my work.

Today I blend evidence informed approaches like EFT and talking therapy with holistic practices including aromatherapy, guided visualisation, intuitive guidance, oracle cards and, where appropriate, channelled insight. Every session is different because every woman's story is different.

Women need someone who can gently help them reconnect with the wisdom that trauma made them forget they already possess.

The beautiful irony is that my greatest heartbreak became my greatest teacher.

Without those losses, I may never have become a birth photographer. I may never have trained as a doula. I may never have discovered EFT, energy healing or the incredible resilience of the female nervous system.

If you've experienced a difficult birth, pregnancy loss or fertility struggles, please know this:

You are not broken.

Your body is not your enemy.

Your nervous system has simply been trying to protect you.

Healing is possible.

Not because the past didn't happen.

But because it no longer has to decide how your future feels.
